The Crossing Guard

On the third day, Freddy calls Mary and breaks down in tears as he tells her of a terrible nightmare he had. In the nightmare, he is driving by his daughter's school and stops at a crosswalk where children (including a living Emily) wait. He sees that John Booth is the crossing guard. Freddy then sees himself run over all of the children, even Emily. They meet at a diner, and Mary tells him that he is beyond her help; Freddy becomes enraged and curses her. After Mary leaves, Freddy gets drunk and starts to drive to John's house. John waits in his trailer. Freddy is pulled over by the police en route to the house and arrested for drunk driving. Before the police can take him in, however, Freddy grabs his pistol and runs away. He breaks into a home and hides in a little girl's room. The girl guides the police away, and Freddy thanks her and leaves.

The Crossing Guard is a community-created melee weapon for all classes with the exception of the Engineer and the Spy. It is a slightly weathered railroad crossing sign with glowing team-colored lights. It appears to have been uprooted violently from its base, as a pair of wires are seen sticking out of the bottom end.

The School Crossing Guard program is a key component of the Safe Routes to Schools program administered by the TAM. The program enhances safety and helps reduce the reluctance parents may have in allowing their children to walk or bicycle to school. The program was first implemented in 2006 with 54 crossing guards.

When school is back in session in January 2019, the TAM will add 15 new Crossing Guards to key intersections near schools. The increase in crossing guards was made possible due to the approval of Measure AA in November. Measure AA significantly increased funding for guards and enabled the expansion of the program to 97 crossing guards throughout Marin. Without the new funding, the program would have been reduced to only 58 crossing guards.

The Crossing Guard Program provides trained crossing guards at key intersections to make it safer for more students throughout Marin County to walk or bike to school. To manage the program, TAM contracts with a professional company that specializes in crossing guard programs ensures that there are well-trained crossing guards with back-ups for every critical intersection, who can be counted on every day, regardless of the weather.

Contacts include school children and other pedestrians to issue instructions, such as when to proceed/stop; police officers to report motorists who do not comply with traffic laws; and school officials to report children and motorists who fail to obey instructions of the employee. Direct, routine assistance is provided to pedestrians and/or vehicles at busy intersections. Work may also be performed at other places, such as church crossings, walking field trips, or for special community County-wide events and emergencies. Parada was a mailman in Lakeview for 35 years before he became a crossing guard. He spent most of his United States Postal Service career working out of the Imperial Towers condo building at 4250 N. Marine Dr.

Before Parada became the Palmer Square crossing guard, he was the crossing guard at Wellington and Kedzie avenues in Avondale, right near where he lives with his wife, a teacher at nearby Goethe Elementary School.

Over the last couple of weeks, Karova, Fronczak and other neighbors have been reaching out to the city and the local alderman to make sure Parada stays in Palmer Square. They had heard the city was planning to cut the crossing guard position at Kedzie and Palmer, which would mean Parada would get moved to another post.
